Alex Murdaugh, convicted in the double murders of his wife Maggie and son Paul and sentenced to consecutive life sentences, was booked into South Carolina’s Kirkland Reception and Evaluation Center in Columbia Friday night, where he’ll be assessed before he’s assigned to one of the state’s maximum security facilities.

The South Carolina Department of Corrections says Murdaugh will under medical, mental health, and education assessments and assigned a specific custody level and prison facility. The department said the process takes about 45 days.
The state has three custody classifications: minimum, medium, and close. It has seven “close security” facilities for men, typically housing more violent offenders with longer sentences, and 11 medium security facilities for men, some of which house both medium and minimum security prisoners.
The Kirkland facility, where all inmates begin their South Carolina prison sojourn, also houses the state’s most violent and dangerous convicts.

Fox News reported that Murdaugh will be housed in a single cell for now, according to a source who said the haircut was standard procedure.
