A Connecticut man suspected of killing his estranged wife and wounded their 19-year-old son was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Virginia after state police there stopped his vehicle.
Waterbury police found Catherine Roberts, 45, dead from gunshot wounds early Tuesday when called to investigate a disturbance, WVIT reported. The teen was also shot and was reported to be in stable condition at the hospital on Wednesday.
Investigators identified Solomon Roberts Sr., 44, as the suspect.
Virginia State Police notified the Connecticut authorities Tuesday afternoon that they had stopped Roberts Sr’s vehicle and found him dead inside.
Troopers said they were told shortly before 11 a.m. to be on the lookout for the vehicle Roberts was believed to be driving — a 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander, according to CT Insider. They and Rockingham County Sheriff’s deputies saw it on Interstate 81 in Rockingham County a short time later and pulled him over.
As they approached the vehicle, they heard a single gunshot.
“Roberts had fired a single round and succumbed to the injury almost immediately,” Virginia State Police said in a news release.
No further details were released.
