A 19-year-old Virginia man is accused of murder after he got into what police suspect was a drug-fueled rage at his father, allegedly beating him to death before assaulting his own mother.
Juan Pina-Ortiz was arrested on Monday before 1:30 a.m. after authorities were called to his home to investigate a reported domestic dispute. An incident report obtained by Law&Crime on Wednesday notes the caller said property was being destroyed in the home and Ortiz was under the influence of an “unknown narcotic.”
At the home, authorities found Ortiz “unclothed” and “actively assaulting” a 51-year-old man they discovered was the young man’s father, Juan Pina-Recendiz.
Officers commanded Pina-Ortiz to stand down and stop the assault on his father, but the punches kept coming, officials said. At one point, Pina-Ortiz “retreat[ed] further into the home” mid-assault and then reemerged only to walk outside and begin charging toward cops, police said.
In an “agitated state,” Pina-Ortiz allegedly rushed forward and grabbed an officer’s vest before a police dog bit the suspect, the incident report notes. The handler was not harmed. Pina-Ortiz was treated for minor injuries before he was detained. He remains in jail and is being held without bond.
The teenager’s father was declared dead from blunt force trauma, police noted. Pina-Ortiz also allegedly assaulted his 52-year-old mother during the melee, authorities said without providing further details.
The 19-year-old faces charges of murder, assault and battery of a law enforcement officer. He was arraigned at the Prince William General District Court on Tuesday, according to a review of online court records. He will have a hearing to determine who will represent him this Friday. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Dec. 12.
