OAKLAND, Calif. (TCD) — Police have identified a homicide victim whose body was found inside a suitcase floating on Lake Merritt last month.
According to the Oakland Police Department, on Oct. 31, shortly before 11 a.m., officers responded the 1900 block of Lakeshore Avenue to a report of a deceased body. Volunteers from the Lake Merritt Institute initially found the suitcase while cleaning around the area, KTVU-TV reports.
The volunteers reportedly tried to lift the suitcase out of the water, but it was too heavy. They eventually unzipped the suitcase and discovered the body, which seemed to be stuffed in a fetal position, according to KTVU.
On Wednesday, Nov. 15, police announced that the victim was identified as 23-year-old Gabriel Raymundo. Officers have asked the public’s help in gathering any information about the victim and the circumstances surrounding his death but confirmed they are investigating this as a homicide case.
Police are offering a reward of up to $10,000 for any tips leading to an arrest.
