A woman allegedly shot and killed her grandson, stunning family members and neighbors over the arrest of the friendly 76-year-old with no criminal history who possibly had dementia.
Mary Jordan was in custody on a murder charge on a $100,000 bond, according to WALA.
Officers claim she took the life of her grandson, Dana Jordan, 38, on Wednesday.
Her alleged motive: She got upset over something he did the previous night. Cops said she confessed. Mary Jordan shot him multiple times. Officers arrived at the residence to find him dead.
Documents reportedly state she has no prior criminal history and may have dementia.
Cousin Alfaye Prince is taking her side, suggesting to the outlet that the shooting was self-defense.
“Mary just wouldn’t do that. I mean, Dana was her favorite,” Prince said. “You get that old you suppose to relax. And she don’t need to relax in that way, not in jail for trying to get somebody off of her.”
She told the outlet that Mary Jordan called her after the shooting. Prince said she did not believe what she was hearing.
“She called me back, and I said, ‘I told you I got to go to the doctor,”” she said. “She said, ‘Faye, I just killed Dana.’ I said, ‘Girl, quit playing. You know you ain’t killed nobody.’”
Prince said Dana Jordan had been living with his grandmother. She described problems, such as Mary Jordan noticing that possessions went missing.
“I don’t know what kind of hold he had on Mary, but he had a hold on her, and I think she was defending herself,” Prince said. “I don’t know what it was, but I know every time she talked to me it was all about money.”
Neighbors reportedly also construed the shooting as out of character. Gregory Carroll Sr. told WKRG he lived next door to Mary Jordan for 15 years.
“Sometimes I would come out on the porch, and she would say good morning to me, and I say good morning back to her,” he said.
