A bloodied and frantic motorist called 911 after being shot by someone in an SUV on a Florida interstate in a road rage attack.
The unidentified 61-year-old man was struck after someone flashed high beams and then fired a shot into his car on Wednesday night on I-4 near mile marker 112 in Deltona, Volusia County. The man’s 19-year-old son, in the passenger seat, was also hurt. They were treated at a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, the Volusia Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. Authorities were searching for the culprit.
“I don’t know, but I’ve just been shot. I’m on the side of the road. Driver shot me in the face. I need help, immediately. I’m on Interstate 4,” the man said in audio obtained by Orlando CBS affiliate WKMG. ” … I’m pouring the blood out.”
“They took off, but they just shot me right in the face, shot through my windows, shot my boy. Oh, my God. Please hurry,” he said.
At one point, he told a dispatcher, “I think I’m going to pass out.”
“I didn’t get out of his way fast enough. I moved over, he pulled up beside me and shot through my window and hit me in the face and kept going,” he said. “It went right through my chin (…) I just heard a big ‘kaboom,’ and I seen blood go everywhere.”
The victims were in a 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class traveling east in the inside lane when the assailant in a black SUV or pickup truck was behind the victim’s vehicle, authorities said. The victim changed lanes from the inside lane to the center lane and the gunman fired a round at the victim’s car. The bullet pierced the driver’s side window and hit the driver and passenger.
“It’s ridiculous, and it’s sad for everyone involved,” said FHP spokesperson Migdalisis Garcia, Fox Orlando affiliate WOFL reported.
