The search for a missing woman ended in tragedy as investigators found her shot in the head multiple times off a highway in another state.
Kelly Sistrunk was 30 years old and the mother of a 2-year-old son. Her death is now being investigated as a homicide.
Cops in Memphis, Tennessee, have said that her mother reported her missing on Jan. 28. Kelly was last seen sitting in her vehicle in the driveway at home. About a half-hour later, she was gone, but the vehicle remained.
“The victim has not been seen since 1/28/2024 and is not like her not to communicate with her family or check in with her son,” police said.
She was last seen wearing a gray Nike pullover, gray Nike leggings, and black Nike slides.
The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office in Mississippi, however, said that the family contacted deputies when they discovered her cellphone was pinging in the area, according to Memphis NBC affiliate WMC. Tragically, her body was found in a wooded area 50 feet off Interstate 22, about four miles east of the city of Holly Springs, reported the outlet and Memphis Fox affiliate WHBQ.
She was reportedly found shot multiple times in the head, though the autopsy is pending.
“It’s terrible, of course, I’ve been in the business over 50 years. Any death is tragic under any circumstances and this certainly is no exception, but it’s one of the most horrendous scenes I’ve seen in my many years of investigation,” Marshall County Sheriff Kenny Dickerson told WMC.
“They took away our daughter,” the slain woman’s mother, Kimberly Sistrunk, told WHBQ.
The investigation into the homicide continues. Authorities have yet to release any indication of a suspect or suspects. They have yet to suggest an explanation for how and when Kelly Sistrunk ended up over in Mississippi.
