Las Vegas woman allegedly killed carpet cleaner in ‘random shooting’ while he was working

Las Vegas woman allegedly killed carpet cleaner in ‘random shooting’ while he was working- In a tragic incident that unfolded in Las Vegas, a 27-year-old woman named Kayla Alery is accused of shooting and killing a 41-year-old man named Raul Cardoza, who was working as a carpet cleaner at the time.

The incident occurred on March 26, 2024, near Spring Mountain and Fort Apache roads, leading to Alery’s arrest on charges of open murder with a deadly weapon, assault with a deadly weapon, and several other felony charges. Alery is also facing a charge of battery by a prisoner.

Cardoza was found near the entrance of an apartment complex in a white van, where he had been providing an estimate to a potential customer. The shooting took place while Cardoza was sitting in the driver’s seat of his van. There is no indication that Cardoza had any prior interaction with Alery, and the incident is described as a “random shooting”.

Several witnesses positively identified Alery as the suspect. During a pat-down search, officers found a handgun concealed in Alery’s front waistband. Alery told police she did not remember how she got the gun but suggested she likely stole it because she did not have any money. Before the shooting, several people noticed a “suspicious person” on the property, and Alery was seen attempting to open different vehicle doors in the parking lot of the complex. A video clip showed Alery trying to open the front door of a parked van and then approaching Cardoza’s van holding what appeared to be a firearm before a gunshot was heard.

Alery has a criminal history, including charges of attempted burglary and arson, and was released from prison just months before the shooting. She was ordered not to have any weapons. After her arrest, Alery attacked another inmate at the Clark County Detention Center while waiting to be processed, leading to additional charges.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) and the Clark County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the incident, which has shocked the community. The case underscores the importance of vigilance and the potential for random acts of violence to occur in public spaces.
