When police in Holly Springs, Mississippi, publicly released photos of two suspects who allegedly shot at cops, one woman immediately recognized them. They were her sons.
She had the 17-year-old and 18-year-old hop into her car and where they took a trip to the police station to turn themselves in, according to a report by NBC affiliate WMC.
Holly Springs police say officers tried to pull over a Red Kia Forte with no headlights on that was driving erratically early Tuesday morning but it fled. During a short chase, at least two shots were fired from the car. No officers were hit by the shots, but at least one hit a police car.
Cops put out an alert about the vehicle and a Marshall County Sheriff’s deputy saw it driving along Interstate 22 toward Memphis. The suspects ditched the car and ran into the woods.
Police found images of the teens on a Ring camera and released the photos to the local media. By Wednesday the suspects, who have not been publicly identified, were in custody, thanks to their mother.
“I don’t play no games with them,” she told WMC. “If you want to do the crime you gotta do the time — plain and simple.”
They face a charge of aggravated assault on a police officer and are at the Marshall County Jail.
Holly Springs Police Chief Darryl Bowens said the teens put the officers in danger.
“The officer could have been injured, people that were on the highway at the time could have been injured because when you discharge a firearm, that bullet could go anywhere,” Bowens told CBS affiliate WREG. “And luckily, the officer wasn’t injured, we haven’t had any pedestrians or anybody that was on the road injured at the time.”
Bowens said while it was difficult the mother did the right thing.
“It was surprising for a parent to turn in their children, but she said, ‘Well they committed the crime, then they have to come and face the consequences of their actions.’ That was very noble for her to turn in her sons,” Bowens told the TV station.
