New York police said on Tuesday that a woman was indicted on murder charges for last year’s deaths of her 5-year-old daughter and son.
According to amNew York, George and Gianna Kantanka were found dead at their Bronx home in December after their mother, Gloria Asamoah, 42, called the police claiming the twins were foaming at the mouth. Police said Asamoah, who was home alone with the children as their father worked, said she found the twins cold and lifeless six hours after initially checking on them.
While Asamoah allegedly also told police the twins had been ill, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny revealed on Tuesday that an autopsy completed last month determined they were asphyxiated.
“The husband was trying to get her to bring the children to an emergency room because he said that they had been vomiting and had green mucus underneath their nose,” NYPD Kenny said, according to the New York Daily News. “She said she would do it in the morning and unfortunately never did.”
A motive remains unclear. amNew York reported there was no evidence of neglect in the home and the fridge was full.
Reports indicated that Asamoah has been in a psychiatric ward since her children’s deaths. Kenny said she will be arrested once doctors clear her.
The victims’ father will not be criminally charged, according to Kenny.
