GREENSBURG, Pa. (TCN) —Â A 32-year-old woman will spend up to 20 years behind bars for trying to kill her daughter because she reportedly believed an imagined serial killer was trying to end their lives.
The Westmoreland County District Attorney’s Office announced May 27 that Skye Naggy was sentenced to 10 to 20 years in prison followed by five years of probation after she pleaded guilty but mentally ill in January to attempted homicide, aiding suicide, aggravated assault, kidnapping, interference with child custody, and endangering the welfare of a child.
According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, on Oct. 25, 2022, Naggy evaded a potential involuntary hospital stay and abducted her daughter, who was 6 at the time, and brought her to a remote area near Loyalhanna Lake. The defendant reportedly gave her child doses of an opioid and fentanyl with an open Bible nearby.
According to prosecutors, on Nov. 17, 2022, Greensburg City Police filed charges against Naggy, saying she had taken the child “from a home where they were under emergency care.”
Following the kidnapping, offers discovered multiple handwritten letters from Naggy, in which the defendant claimed she “needed to find fentanyl because she was unable to protect herself and the child.” Naggy allegedly believed God told her she was “going to die soon” and that an imagined serial killer she was romantically involved with was trying to end her and her daughter’s lives.
Police tracked the defendant’s phone and located her and the child in a wooded area off of a trail. The victim, who had fentanyl and opiates in her system, survived and is in the care of a family member.
Naggy reportedly said, “My only goal was to save my daughter from a serial killer. I did not realize I had schizophrenia until it was too late.”
According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, during the trial, two psychiatrists said Naggy was diagnosed with schizophrenia after her arrest. They reportedly said Naggy continued to show signs of mental illness and will require ongoing treatment.
