SAN JOSE, Calif. (TCN) — Police recently arrested a 48-year-old father accused of fatally stabbing his young son at a park before reporting the incident and refusing to drop his weapon.
On July 13, San Jose Police responded to a report of a stabbing at Cataldi Park and found Mateusz Dzierbun armed with a large kitchen knife and “hunched over a bleeding 9-year-old child.” Dzierbun failed to comply with officers’ commands and reportedly “refused to drop the knife.”
Authorities said the suspect “abruptly stood up, raised the knife, and charged” at police, leading to an officer-involved shooting.
At the scene, officials observed multiple stab wounds to the child and determined he was already dead.
Police took Dzierbun into custody. He was transported to a local hospital and also pronounced deceased.
Upon further investigation, detectives determined Dzierbun was the victim’s father and the one who reported the stabbing. Authorities believe he killed his son at the park and called law enforcement to “force a deadly confrontation upon their arrival.”
San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan said, “I cannot imagine how scared this child must have been when the person meant to be their protector became their attacker. As a parent and as a human being, there are no words to describe how horrific and heartbreaking this act of violence is. I’m grateful to our police department for responding swiftly and professionally to bring accountability in the face of such an unthinkable crime.”
San Jose Police Chief Paul Joseph added, “Our officers were faced with an unthinkable scene and responded with urgency, courage, and professionalism.”
