An alleged drunken driver in Massachusetts found herself submersed in a cranberry bog early Thanksgiving morning.
Police in Wareham — some 55 miles south of Boston — said in a Facebook post that Alisha McGough, 31, was under the influence of alcohol when the car she was driving somehow overturned just after midnight on Thursday and sank into the bog, which serves essentially as a place to harvest the tart berries that are a staple on American Thanksgiving dinner tables.
Fortunately for McGough, she wasn’t alone.
“When officers arrived on scene, they observed the vehicle overturned, and a good Samaritan was helping the lone occupant of the vehicle out of the vehicle that was submerged in water,” police said.
McGough was charged with operating under the influence (OUI) of alcohol and negligent operation, the Facebook post said.
Police said that McGough would be arraigned at Wareham District Court on Friday.
According to local news website Wareham Week, the nearby observers were Sammy Thomas and Austin Maxim, who parked at the end of the road and saw McGough driving.
According to their account, she started to turn around on the road and ended up in the water. Thomas said he jumped in the water to check on McGough while Maxim called 911, the Wareham Week story said.
“Honestly, I just did what I had to do, I guess,” Thomas said.
McGough said she couldn’t swim, so Maxim climbed across the overturned belly of the car and opened a rear door for her to crawl through, Thomas said, according to the report.
