TOPEKA, Kan. (TCN) — A woman will spend time behind bars for fatally shooting her husband, a U.S. Army soldier, near their two minor kids.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Kansas announced Sept. 26 that 31-year-old Margaret Shafe received a sentence of 293 months, or 24.4 years, in prison. A federal jury previously convicted her in February of second-degree murder in connection with the death of her husband, Greg Shafe, at their home on the Fort Riley military installation.
According to prosecutors, in February 2024, Margaret Shafe “shot her husband in the face while in the presence of two minor children.”
According to a report obtained by KCTV-TV, the victim was scheduled to deploy to Poland but stayed home after the birth of his baby. Following his death, the defendant’s 9-year-old daughter allegedly told her biological father about the shooting, and he called law enforcement.
Per documents reviewed by KCTV, Shafe told investigators that she believed her husband had been watching child pornography and was concerned.
U.S. Attorney Ryan Kriegshauser said, “Margaret Shafe deserves to go to prison. The evidence in this case showed she murdered her husband while the couple’s two young daughters were in the home. The court heard brave testimony from Ms. Shafe’s own daughter, who witnessed her mother shoot her stepfather in a fury.”
