TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (TCN) — Police recently arrested a 25-year-old man after he allegedly killed a child his girlfriend was caring for.
According to the Tallahassee Police Department, on the morning of June 23, officials responded to a home on Saxon Street to a report of a child who wasn’t breathing. Officials immediately tried to revive the 1-year-old, but she was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
An autopsy revealed the victim sustained severe injuries, “including multiple strikes to the head with a closed fist that ultimately caused the child’s death.” Upon further investigation, detectives learned Deric Young, the boyfriend of the child’s babysitter, was allegedly caring for the victim at the time.
According to an arrest affidavit obtained by WCTV-TV, Young eventually admitted to officials that he repeatedly punched the 1-year-old after his girlfriend, the child’s original babysitter, went to work. The victim’s twin brother was allegedly in the room during the incident but wasn’t physically harmed.
Detectives arrested Young on charges of murder and aggravated child abuse, and he remains held in the Leon County Jail.
