A high school prank ended in a Georgia teacher’s death and five students’ arrests, one for homicide.
A late-night toilet-papering prank turned fatal on Friday night, resulting in the death of Jason Hughes, 40, a beloved math teacher and golf coach at North Hall High School in Gainesville.
According to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office, five teenagers arrived at Hughes’ home on North Gate Drive around 11:40 p.m. to cover the property with toilet paper. When Hughes came outside, the group attempted to flee in two vehicles.
Investigators said Hughes tripped and fell into the street, where Jayden Ryan Wallace, 18, struck him with a truck, WSB-TV reported.
The teens attempted to provide aid before first responders transported Hughes to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Police arrested Wallace at the scene. He faces charges that include first-degree vehicular homicide, reckless driving, criminal trespassing, and littering.
Four other 18-year-olds—Elijah Tate Owens, Aiden Hucks, Ana Katherine Luque, and Ariana Cruz—were arrested and charged with criminal trespass and littering.
The Hall County School District expressed deep mourning, describing Hughes as a “passionate teacher and mentor” and a devoted family man in a statement provided by Local12:
“Our hearts are broken. Jason Hughes was a loving husband, a devoted father; a passionate teacher, mentor, and coach who was loved and respected by students and colleagues.
“He gave so much to so many in numerous ways. Our hearts and prayers go out to his wife and family. We ask that the media and the public respect their privacy as they grieve.”
The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
