A beloved junior high and high school teacher and coach was found dead from a gunshot wound at her home Wednesday night, and police said they “have a person of interest.”
No arrests had been made as of Thursday evening, however, according to WFMJ.
The Columbiana County Sheriff’s Office said it was called to the scene just before 9:30 p.m. Wednesday night and found Michelle Long, 50, dead at her home in Butler Township, the Morning Journal reported.
Long taught math, STEM, and industry classes in the Leetonia Exempted Village School District and was the junior high school robotics and track coach. She had been with the district for eight years.
Superintendent Dennis Dunham said Long’s death was a “huge loss for the district” but that schools would remain open.
“We feel it’s extremely important that our students are in the building here so we can provide the support necessary,” he said.
Leetonia High School did cancel a girl’s varsity basketball game that had been scheduled for Thursday night, however, WFMJ reported.
