California law enforcement has released bodycam footage that shows what led officers in November to open fire on a 24-year-old woman who had earlier called 911 claiming that her dog was barking in someone else’s yard.
Kyrieanna Rebekah Liles, of Placentia, was arrested and booked for assaulting an officer on Nov. 20, a felony charge that has kept her behind bars on $500,000 bail into the new year, jail records reviewed by Law&Crime show. Video of the circumstances prior to the alleged assault shed light on a bizarre situation that began with the suspect’s own 911 call about a supposedly lost or stolen dog.
The video released by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office showed Rancho Cordova Police Department officers (who also work as deputies) questioning Liles as she sat behind the wheel in a Dodge Challenger with a dog inside the vehicle.
After authorities arrived, she wasn’t interested in speaking with them.
“I just got back from getting her,” the woman said, referring to her dog. “I’m sorry. I’m not dealing with this right now. I’m going through a lot.”
As the officer asked Liles what she was going through, she shut her door. The officer then asked her to step out of the vehicle. She refused.
The suspect, wearing sunglasses and using her cell phone, repeated “leave me alone.” Next, Liles claimed that someone stole her dog.
“Oh, come on,” Liles said as the officer again asked her to step out of the car. “I didn’t do anything wrong.”
Then she did something wrong.
Rather than complying, bodycam footage showed she started her car, reversed the vehicle, and drove forward in the direction of cops across a front yard. As she sped off, law enforcement audibly opened fire multiple times, with one shot wounding her arm.
Authorities said that Liles kept on driving for roughly 15 minutes before they caught up to her, successfully ordered her to get out of the Dodge, and arrested her.
But what about her missing or stolen dog claim?
Bodycam video also showed neighbors had separately called 911 that day and told the sheriff’s office Liles was walking around with a butcher knife and trying to break into their home.
A dispatcher dialed up Liles and asked her directly if she was walking around with a butcher knife. She claimed she was just sitting in a chair in her room and that she had found her dog after all.
Investigators speaking with Liles’ dog-owning neighbors were told, however, that she had wrongly accused them of stealing her dog and had brandished a knife. The neighbors showed investigators Ring doorbell footage of the agitated suspect, allegedly with a knife in hand, pounding on the front door.
After Liles’ arrest, authorities said they found a knife in the suspect’s home matching the one neighbors described.
Jail records show that Liles is scheduled to appear in court next on the morning of Jan. 8.
