A California mother has been found deceased after vanishing weeks ago, and her husband has fled the country with three children, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department says.
ABC 7 reported that the Montrose Mountain Search and Rescue team found Sheylla Gutierrez, 33, deceased at California’s Angeles National Forest last weekend.
Gutierrez’s husband, 36-year-old Jossimar Cabrera, who has alleged past domestic abuse claims against him, is believed to have fled to Peru with their children.
According to Gutierrez’s mother, Helga Rocillo, Cabrera has a history of domestic abuse in Peru, and her daughter had planned to file charges against him before her disappearance.
“She told me that Jossimar Cabrera Cornejo hit her, mistreated her, and even slapped my youngest grandchild, who is 3 years old,” Rocillo said, according to the Los Angeles Times.
“I called my daughter, but she didn’t answer. I spoke to Josimar on Sunday, and he told me that immigration had taken my daughter.”
After her disappearance, Cabrera allegedly gave multiple accounts of Gutierrez’s whereabouts. He reportedly claimed she may have been taken by ICE, left with another man, or suffered an accident, according to Gutierrez’s sister.
According to the video KTLA obtained, Cabrera can be seen dragging something large wrapped in a greenish material outside the couple’s home.
The searchers found Gutierrez’s body the next day, wrapped in what appears to be similar to the material seen in the video.
On Tuesday, it is believed that Peruvian authorities detained Cabrera, based on a video KTLA received. Reportedly, Cabrera has been released pending official charges being filed.
An autopsy is being performed and will hopefully be released shortly to determine Gutierrez’s official cause of death.
