A Colorado man who told police he “accidentally” shot his wife in the chest while cleaning his gun waited hour to call 911, newly revealed court documents say.
The shooting took place on September 7, the Denver Post reported. An arrest affidavit at the time said that David O’Grady, 37, told officers he attempted CPR for about an hour before calling 911.
But new court documents say that O’Grady later said that 29-year-old Taylor Last had been dead for “several hours” when he made the call.
And he changed his story from the accidental discharge narrative. In a later interview, he told detectives that he and Last had gotten into an argument about a party earlier that night. He said he aimed the gun and fired into their empty bed, and when Last entered the room, he turned to her and shot her in the chest.
The couple’s 6- and 4-year-old children were sleeping in another room at the time of the shooting, as was O’Grady’s mother, Law&Crime reported. The children, sleeping in a shared bedroom across the hall from their parents, told investigators they heard “loud arguing” and a “bang” that made them “jump” out of bed, the affidavit says.
The children said their father “had thrown something” at their mother and she fell “onto the bed with her hands up in the air,” according to the affidavit.
Deputies found Last “lying on her back on the ground, with her left arm on her chest,” the affidavit said. Her body was “cold and stiff to the touch, indicating that Taylor had been dead for a while.”
O’Grady was charged with two counts of first degree murder, failing to securely store his murder weapon, reckless endangerment, and child abuse, court records show. He is due in court on December 12.
