Joran van der Sloot is no longer on US soil.
The 36-year-old Dutch national was released from the Shelby County Jail Monday just after midnight, escorted by U.S. Marshals to the Birmingham International Airport. The plane that was supposed to fly van de Sloot back to Peru experienced some type of mechanical issue and take off was delayed by 24 hours.
However, the man who confessed to killing Alabama teen Natalee Holloway is now in Aruba and officially back in the custody of Peruvian officials, to serve out the rest of his sentence for the murder of Stephanie Flores, and his concurrent sentence for extorting money from the Holloway family.
