According to data website Capology, De Bruyne receives £20.8m per year from Premier League champions Manchester City. Ronaldo will earn £40m more than the Belgian if he pens his deal in Saudi Arabia, of which the details were reported by CBS Sport. The Portugal captain’s former club team-mate, David de Gea, is joint-second on the list alongside Manchester City ace Erling Haaland. Both players earn around £19.5m in a year, while Mohamed Salah and Jadon Sancho are rewarded with £18.2m.

Despite the Premier League’s huge wages, nobody will come close to Ronaldo. The money will soften the blow of failing to secure a move to a European club.

Ronaldo is currently playing for Portugal at the World Cup. The striker appears to have upset boss Fernando Santos, though, with his conduct coming into question – just as it did under Erik ten Hag.

His Saudi deal will make some of his former teammates’ contracts pale in comparison. Reports suggest that the 37-year-old will earn a base salary of £60m, while other bonuses could see him take home an extra £100m on top of that figure.

Ronaldo was English football’s highest-paid star before his abrupt departure from Old Trafford. He earned around £6m more than Kevin De Bruyne, the new highest-paid player in the top flight.

The former Real Madrid ace appeared to react badly to being substituted during Portugal’s defeat by South Korea last week. Santos claims he did not see the outburst, but the 68-year-old did not take kindly to Ronaldo being embroiled in an argument with a Korean player at full-time.

“Let’s split this answer in two. Right after the match, I spoke in the flash interview, and then went to the press conference, and there I said something I’ll repeat here: on the pitch, I didn’t hear anything,” Santos told journalists.

“I was too far [away], and this is why I only saw him arguing with a South Korean player, and nothing else. Have I already watched the footage? Yes. I didn’t like it. Didn’t like it at all.

“From there, it’s things you sort out internally. It was sorted out this way, and now we think about the game tomorrow. Everyone is focused on the game.”
