The father of a 5-year-old Nevada girl was charged with murder on Wednesday, four months after the girl found dead on a mattress in her Cold Springs home.
Nicholas Loving was initially charged with child abuse resulting in substantial bodily harm after Izabella Loving’s death in April. The new charge comes after the completion of a lengthy investigation by police and the Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office, KTVN reported.
The girl’s mother was charged last month with child abuse, as CrimeOnline reported.
Izabella Loving had visible injuries on her face, pelvis, hips, and genitals. Nicholas Loving gave officers varying stories about what happened to the 5-year-old. He reportedly stated that the girl was sick and coughing up blood and mucus for nine to 10 days. The family claimed they were waiting for the 12-day mark to take her to the doctor.
The parents also said their daughter was hit in the head with a bat, but they could not explain her other injuries. Nicholas Loving also claimed the girl fell out of a truck.
Andrea Loving also admitted to witnessing her husband kick their daughter in the genitals and drag her by the hood or collar of her sweatshirt. Five days before their daughter’s death, Andrea Loving reportedly said she overheard her husband screaming and a thud consistent with a child being thrown.
Nicholas Loving was arrested days after the girl’s death and given a $10 million bond. His wife was given a $5 million bond on her arrest.
District Chris Hicks issued a statement praising investigators “for their relentless efforts and unwavering dedication throughout this difficult investigation.”
Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam also issued a statement, noting that the murder charge “is the next step in finding justice for Izzy.”
“From day one, I made the commitment that we would labor relentlessly to investigate this case and work tirelessly to be the voice for and bring justice to Izzy,” he said. ” … As this case continues to move forward, we will not stop devoting ourselves to Izzy and achieving justice for her.”
