A DC man killed his girlfriend and wounded her 12-year-old daughter before killing himself after a police pursuit on Wednesday.

Briefly, a 3-year-old boy, the son of Stephon Jeter and the murdered woman, was missing, but police later found him at a family member’s home, WJLA reported.

DC Metropolitan Police were called to a home shortly before 5 p.m. on Wednesday and found the mother with multiple gunshot wounds. Medics could not save her. Two children were also found in the home; the girl had a minor gunshot wound and was taken to a hospital, while the woman’s 8-year-old son was unharmed and handed over to his father.

Police identified 35-year-old Jeter as the suspect in the shooting and put out an Amber Alert after learning that the toddler was missing.

Police said they tracked Jeter into Maryland’s Prince George’s County, spotting him around 6:30 p.m., WTTG reported, and a police chase ended when he crashed his truck. Officers found him inside, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. But the missing boy was not there because Jeter had dropped him off at a relative’s home while he tried to avoid accountability for the murder.

“This is a tragic situation that underscores the dangers of domestic violence,” Interim Metro Police Chief Jeffrey Carroll said.

Police have not released the name of the victim.
