On Friday, Indiana police charged a woman for allegedly dousing customers’ meals in pepper spray.
On December 7, the victim told Vanderburgh County police that he and his wife experienced burning in their mouths, noses, throats, and stomachs after eating food delivered via DoorDash. A review of the victims’ surveillance footage showed DoorDash driver Kourtney Stevenson, 29, putting the food on the porch and taking a picture of it before spraying it with an aerosol can which was attached to her keychain.
The Courier & Journal reported that detectives subpoenaed Doordash’s records, allowing them to identify the suspect as Stevenson. Stevenson confirmed that she had completed some orders while visiting her father in Evansville, according to police.
Stevenson allegedly claimed she shot pepper spray at a spider, not the couple’s food. However, police quickly determined this was not the case.
“The overnight low was 35°F. At that temperature, outdoor spiders in Indiana are not active and would not be capable of crawling on exposed surfaces,” they noted.
Stevenson, who was arrested in Kentucky, was charged with felony battery and consumer product tampering. She remains jailed on $3,500 bond as she awaits extradition to Indiana.
Doordash said it fired Stevenson prior to her arrest on Friday.
