A Canadian man who was in Wisconsin for a “father son golf event” was shot dead by a DoorDash driver making deliveries, according to police. Cops say the victim was with a group of “highly intoxicated” people and the driver claims they were “calling him stupid” and “flipped him off” for not giving them a free ride.

Surveillance video obtained from a nearby business shows victim Giovanni “Mike” Robinson, 32, and four of his pals allegedly walking in the road around the 100 block of Pine Street in Sheboygan last Wednesday — “talking about a shake down” — after being denied a free ride by 35-year-old suspect Luis E. Cruz Burgos, according to a criminal complaint obtained by Law&Crime on Monday.

“F— that tool,” one of the men can be heard saying, per the complaint.

The individual allegedly stated that he was “not going to give him [Cruz Burgos] $40 for five minutes of work, Spanish or not,” the complaint says.

According to Sheboygan investigators, Robinson and his friends had stopped “somewhere in the middle of Pine Street between Broadway and Buffalo Streets” while walking back to their hotel at around midnight after drinking at a local “tavern.”

They allegedly encountered Cruz Burgos as he was parked in the area and started “communicating” with him in Spanish for a ride. “The interaction was not hostile from either side,” a person from the group told cops, according to the complaint.

Cruz Burgos allegedly said he would not give them a ride for free, but he would do it for $40. However, the men were “not willing to pay that amount,” the complaint alleges.

“F— that, let’s walk home,” one of the men allegedly recalled saying, noting how the group “began to walk away.” Cops say Cruz Burgos drove off in his SUV but then returned to allegedly open fire on them.

“[One of the men] said that walking on Monroe Street he heard a vehicle accelerate coming from Broadway Street,” the complaint states. “He said he turned to his left and observed two headlights coming from Broadway Street. He heard what sounded like a loud firecracker, but it was a gunshot. He advised that [another person in the group] screamed.”

Cruz Burgos allegedly shot Robinson, who died from a single gunshot wound. The DoorDash driver spoke to police about what he claims happened and allegedly admitted that he encountered the group, but didn’t shoot anyone.

“Cruz-Burgos said that during his first delivery he encountered four white males who appeared to be ‘drunk’ attempting to stop cars,” the complaint says. “He described them as having their thumbs out in what appeared to have been a hitchhiking sign.”

Cruz Burgos told police “there was no argument in reference to possibly negotiating funds” for a ride and that he simply refused to take them to their hotel in Kohler. “He advised that the males were calling him stupid or stating ‘stupid’ and one of them flipped him off once Cruz-Burgos began to drive off,” the complaint says. “He said that after the encounter with the males he conducted a u-turn and went towards Sheboygan. He said that he drove past the white males.”

According to Cruz Burgos, as he passed the group “everything appeared to be fine” and nobody was shot. He allegedly claimed that he did not have a gun and did not shoot anyone.

“Cruz-Burgos said he no longer possessed any firearms in reference to a court order from Florida in 2019 where he was advised that he could not obtain a firearm in reference to a domestic incident,” the complaint says.

Cruz Burgos, who is from Sheboygan, was arrested and charged with first-degree reckless homicide for the fatal shooting. He faces 60 years in prison, if convicted.

A GoFundMe created for Robinson’s family said he was killed “after celebrating his first hole-in-one on a golf trip,” per the description. It describes Cruz Burgos as a “monster” who allegedly took his life in a “drive by.”
