SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. (TCN) — A man has been sentenced to death for the murder of his girlfriend and her unborn child in 2022.
At a hearing on Dec. 5 in Sanford, Florida, Circuit Judge Donna Goerner gave Donovan L. Faison, 23, a death sentence for killing 18-year-old Kaylin Fiengo. In October, Faison was convicted of first-degree murder with a firearm, killing an unborn child, and burglary with a firearm, the Office of the State Attorney, 18th Judicial Circuit, announced in a press release.
On Oct. 30, the jury voted 11-1 to recommend the death penalty for Faison. During the trial, Assistant State Attorney Stewart Stone described the killing as cold, calculated, and premeditated.
Text messages from Faison to Fiengo were shown to the jury, according to the state attorney’s office. These messages showed Faison was angry at Fiengo for not terminating the pregnancy. In a text message to a friend, Faison said he would “crop her out.”
According to the state attorney’s office, Faison lured Fiengo to a meeting at a park and shot her in the head in her car. The Miami Herald reports during a routine patrol on Nov. 11, 2022, an officer discovered a vehicle running with someone in the driver’s seat. WWNY reports bullet casings were found near the car, along with an ultrasound image.
According to an arrest affidavit obtained by the Miami Herald, the officer found Fiengo inside the car with a gunshot wound; emergency personnel later declared her dead. While police were investigating the scene, a friend of Fiengo’s arrived at the park after tracking her location via iPhone. The friend told police that Fiengo had gone to the park to meet with Faison, but that they had not heard from her.
At the time of the murder, Faison and Fiengo had been intimate, but Faison was allegedly in a relationship with another woman. That couple had a baby together, according to the Miami Herald. Reportedly, Faison bought Plan B for Fiengo when she told him she was pregnant, but when she did not take the medication, he insisted she terminate the pregnancy.
Faison’s girlfriend and the mother of his child discovered that Faison was cheating on her with Fiengo and threatened to leave him if a paternity test revealed him as the father. The two then shared their iPhone’s locations with one another as a show of trust, according to the Miami Herald. Reportedly, before shooting Fiengo, Faison removed his phone’s SIM card so the location could not be tracked.
He was arrested 10 months later, on Aug. 29, 2023.
