The San Jose State football team’s Saturday matchup has been postponed following the death of freshman running back Camdan McWright. McWright, 18, was struck and killed by a school bus Friday morning near the university, officials said. He was riding an electric scooter through an intersection blocks from campus when he was hit just before 7 a.m., according to university and police officials.

California Highway Patrol spokesperson Officer Ross Lee said the scooter rider, later identified as McWright, died at the scene. The team’s game against Utah State has been postponed out of respect for McWright and his family, the university said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Camdan’s family during this difficult time,” said Spartans head coach Brent Brennan. “Camdan was an outstanding young man with a bright future ahead of him.”

A native of Southern California, McWright was a star running back at St. Genevieve High School in Panorama City. He was twice named Camino Real League Most Valuable Player and was a first-team all-league honoree. He came to SJSU with dreams of becoming a TV sports analyst and had just turned 19 in December.

McWright was an outstanding young man with a bright future ahead of him. His death is a tragic loss for his family, friends, and the SJSU community. We offer our deepest condolences to those who knew and loved him.

Officer Rose Lee Stated

On Friday morning, a bus and a car collided at the intersection of Reed Street. CHP Officer Ross Lee said that the victim “traveled into the path of the bus” as it was heading east on Reed Street. Some witnesses on scene gave statements that the traffic traveling on Reed at the time had a green light, but that is still something that needs to be confirmed and will be part of the investigation. The bus driver is cooperating with the investigation.
