CAPITOLA, Calif. (TCD) — Police arrested a 54-year-old man this week on suspicion of killing his 61-year-old missing girlfriend, whose remains were found in a wooded area.
According to the Capitola Police Department, Alice “Alyx” Herrmann was last seen on Dec. 3, 2023, in Santa Cruz. Police received a welfare check on Herrmann on Dec. 12 at around 2:20 p.m. after a family member said she had missed a flight to Hawaii. Officers searched Herrmann’s Capitola home but couldn’t find her and determined she was missing.
According to law enforcement, Herrmann’s car was parked outside the home of her boyfriend, Theobald Lengyel. Investigators determined Herrmann had been a victim of a homicide and identified her boyfriend as a person of interest.
Police said investigators found human remains in a wooded area in Tilden Regional Park in Berkeley. The Contra County Coroner’s Office will conduct an autopsy and positively identify the victim.
With the help of the Santa Cruz County District Attorney’s Office, El Cerrito Police Department, and the Department of Justice, police arrested Lengyel on suspicion of Herrmann’s death on Tuesday, Jan. 2. Lengyel was booked into the Santa Cruz County Jail without bail.
According to KRCR-TV, the suspect was a founding member of the Humboldt County band Mr. Bungle.
Prior to allegedly killing his girlfriend, another victim had filed a restraining order against Lengyel in 2017 following a domestic violence incident. The two eventually filed for divorce.
