DALTON, Ga. (TCN) —Â A 37-year-old man allegedly killed his wife and girlfriend before taking his own life last week.
On May 23, the Dalton Police Department responded to an apartment on Murray Avenue to perform a welfare check after co-workers said they hadn’t seen or heard from 35-year-old Rebeca Akins in several days. After no one answered the door, apartment staff let officers in, and they found Akins deceased with an apparent gunshot wound to the head.
Detectives obtained surveillance footage and reportedly saw the suspect, later identified as Rebeca Akins’ husband, Kevin Akins, leaving the apartment complex on the morning of May 21.
Investigators tracked Kevin Akins’ vehicle to an apartment complex on Shadow Lane. On May 24, while officials waited for a search warrant, a man arrived at the scene and used a key to enter the unit they planned to investigate. Officers said the man had come to check on his daughter, 33-year old Cindel Mae Rhoden, after she hadn’t been heard from for a few days. The man came back outside and called law enforcement after he discovered his daughter and her boyfriend, Kevin Akins, deceased.
Upon further investigation, police determined Akins allegedly fatally shot Rhoden and then took his own life.
In a statement obtained by WANF-TV, Rhoden’s aunt said, “She was a victim of manipulation. She took people at their word. That was her mistake. But it doesn’t mean she deserved or asked or put herself in the position for this to happen.”
Rhoden’s aunt also reportedly said her niece was five months pregnant when she died.
