SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. (TCN) — Police conducting a welfare check at a home Nov. 15 discovered a dead 11-year-old and her mother, who had allegedly attempted suicide.
According to a news release from the Sandy Springs Police Department, a concerned family member requested the welfare check. When officers arrived, they found 42-year-old Shannen Grimes in the house with her deceased daughter, Genesis. Detectives took over the investigation and Grimes was taken into custody.
WHSV reports Grimes was taken to a hospital to be treated for her injuries before being booked into the Fulton County Jail on two counts of murder and one count each of first-degree cruelty to children, possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of a felony, and tampering with evidence.
According to arrest warrants obtained by WHSV, Grimes’ sister had requested a welfare check after Grimes told her she had attempted suicide. First responders reportedly found Grimes bleeding on a couch with cuts to at least one of her wrists.
They then discovered Genesis’ body in a recliner with a blanket or towel covering her legs. When officers asked Grimes what had happened to the child, she reportedly said, “I happened.” An investigation showed the child had been stabbed four times in the neck and shoulder.
Blood and bloodstains were spotted throughout the home, and there were bloody knives in a kitchen sink, along with items used to clean up blood, WHSV reports. There was little blood found on Genesis, and investigators believe she had been cleaned before being placed on the recliner.
While being transported to the hospital, Grimes allegedly told paramedics she had stabbed her daughter, WHSV reports.
Police said the investigation is ongoing.
