Graham Potter reiterates his X-rated comment as he reacts to Chelsea drawing Real Madrid

[ad_1]

Graham Potter has reiterated that Chelsea will ‘try’ to win the Champions League in a light-hearted response to drawing Real Madrid in the competition’s quarter-final draw.

Potter was this week speaking at a club event when he was asked for a message to the Chelsea fans. His response caught supporters off guard as he proclaimed ‘The support we’ve had has been amazing. And we’ll need them on Saturday. We’ll try and beat Everton, then we’ll take the draw, and then we’ll try and win the f***ing Champions League.’

His X-rated comment went viral and showed the personality of Potter, which is not always evident on the touchline.

Since his stirring message Chelsea have been drawn with reigning European champions Real Madrid in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, and the former Brighton boss was asked in his pre-match press conference to Everton if he still thinks the club will still ‘bleep’ win the Champions League.

Smiling at the reference to his previous quip, Potter said: ‘Well, I said we’d try and ‘blank’ win the Champions League, and I’m sure that’s the same for the other seven clubs as well.

And all the other clubs would also say you could lose in the quarter-final, because that’s the nature of the Champions League.

We’ll focus on Real Madrid when we get there, but at the moment it’s Everton.’

Chelsea progressed to the last-8 thanks to a 2-1 aggregate win over Borussia Dortmund, while Real Madrid swept Liverpool aside by winning 5-2 at Anfield before finishing the job this week with a 1-0 win back in Madrid.

The pair met at the quarter-final stage in last season’s competition, where Carlo Ancelotti’s men got the better of the west London side in a roller-coster of a tie.

Madrid led 3-1 going into the second leg at the Bernabeu, but Chelsea stunned their hosts by racing quickly into a 2-0 led and adding a third to secure their passage through to the semi-final with just 15 minutes to go.

Real Madrid and Chelsea clashed at the same stage last season as Madrid eliminated the Blues

However, two late goals from Rodrygo and Karim Benzema turned the tie on it’s head and saw Madrid go on to play Manchester City in the last four and eventually go on and win the tournament.

When asked about if he winced when he saw that it would be Real Madrid again for his Chelsea team, Potter played on the excitement of the draw but insisted the focus first is on the Premier League.

‘The feeling is excited’. The Chelsea manager added.

‘But as I said I’d rather speak about Everton because that’s the game tomorrow, and the other stuff is long, long away.’

Chelsea head into the clash on Saturday 10th in the Premier League, eleven points off the Champions League places.
