An Alabama man has been charged with murder following Sunday’s shooting at a bonfire that injured four people, including a woman who is not expected to survive.
Jefferson County police responded to a remote location in Pinson where four people had been shot, including Kimber Mills, 18. Steven Whitehead, 27, was taken into custody as police believe a verbal and physical altercation preceded the shooting, according to WBRC.
Trussville Police Chief Eric Rush said Mills was shot in the head and leg. One of Mills’ sisters told AL.com that the high school cheerleader suffered too much brain swelling and she would be on feeding and breathing tubes for the rest of her life if she were to survive.
“We do have her on a DNR because we don’t want to hurt her anymore trying to bring her back. There is no surgery that would give her a life worth living,” the sister commented, noting that doctors believe Mills has days to live.
Mills’ sister claimed Whitehead crashed the bonfire, and that Mills and her friends did not know him. Whitehead allegedly tried to offer a drink and talk to one of Mills’ friends — who alerted her boyfriend. A large fight reportedly ensued before gunshots broke out.
“Kimber was caught in the crossfire,” Mills’ sister told AL.com.
The three other shooting victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Whitehead has been charged with murder as Mills has been deemed brain dead. He remains jailed without bond.
Additional charges are pending.
