LAKESIDE, Calif. (TCD) — Investigators recently released the identity of a 1986 cold case victim whose body was found on the side of the road in an embankment.
According to an April 9 news release from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, on Sunday, Aug. 3, 1986, officials discovered the remains of a deceased woman on an embankment near State Route 67 south of Poway Road. Investigators said the female suffered traumatic injuries, suggesting foul play, and the medical examiner ruled her death a homicide.
The sheriff’s department said investigators developed a few leads but could not identify the victim, and the case went cold. Homicide Cold Case detective reviewed the case throughout the years but never developed further leads.
In February 2022, sheriff’s department detectives and analysts used genetic genealogy with the victim’s DNA profile to help identify her. As a result, two years later, investigators positively named the woman as Maria Pilar Del Gadillo Carrillo. She was reportedly 43 years old when she died.
According to the sheriff’s department, Carrillo came to the U.S. from Yahaulica, Jalisco, Mexico, the same year she died. Officials have notified the victim’s family.
The investigation remains ongoing as detectives look into Carrillo’s movements before her slaying.
