Indiana authorities are investigating after a woman was shot and killed during a cleaning job on Wednesday.
Police who responded to a Whitestown house found Maria Florinda Rios Perez de Velasquez, 32, suffering from a gunshot wound on the front porch. Police believe de Velasquez went to he wrong address for a cleaning job and the homeowner shot her from inside the residence, according to WRTV.
De Velasquez’s husband insisted, however, that they went to the right house — adding that he checked the address twice before approaching. Investigators swiftly concluded the couple was not committing a break-in and was part of a cleaning crew, according to the Indy Star.
The Boone County Coroner’s Office determined de Velasquez was fatally shot in the head and ruled her death a homicide.
Additionally, Whitestown Metropolitan police said it completed its investigation and turned it over to Boone County prosecutors, who will make the final determination regarding whether to pursue criminal charges. The homeowner has not been publicly identified, as they have not yet been criminally charged.
Meanwhile, Whitestown police officials denied claims that the homeowner is a local police officer.
“No officer—whether currently serving, retired, resigned, terminated, or otherwise affiliated with the Whitestown Metropolitan Police Department or any other police department—resides at or has any personal connection to the location of the incident,” the department said in a statement issued to WRTV. “These inaccurate claims pose a serious safety risk to uninvolved officers and their families and must cease immediately.”
