SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (TCN) — Police recently arrested a 76-year-old man on suspicion of fatally shooting his 45-year-old daughter-in-law outside a wedding.
According to the Schaumburg Police Department, on the night of July 25, officers responded to a possible shooting in a parking lot. Authorities found Christine Moyer of Ohio near the front entrance of a hotel with a gunshot wound to the head. She was transported to a hospital, where she died from her injuries.
A citizen reportedly restrained the suspect, Roland Schmidt, on the ground, and officers took him into custody. Upon further investigation, detectives learned Moyer and her father-in-law, Schmidt, attended a wedding at the hotel. As Moyer was leaving, Schmidt allegedly followed her and shot her in the head.
According to WMAQ-TV, the alleged “execution-style” shooting occurred in front of several family members. Schmidt had allegedly planned the shooting and was going to turn the gun on himself.
Police allege that Schmidt was “upset with Moyer over divorce paperwork” that was “filed against his son.”
Schmidt faces a charge of first-degree murder.
