Indiana man charged after allegedly killing and dismembering man, setting his house on fire

CHICAGO (TCN) — A man has been charged in connection with the alleged shooting and dismemberment of a man and the arson of his house on March 7, police say.

On Dec. 7, the Chicago Police Department announced that Deparris Slaughter, 32, had been identified as the suspect. He was arrested and charged Dec. 6 with one count each of first-degree murder, residential arson, dismembering a human body, and concealing a homicidal death.

Michael Lipford, 68, was found in the basement of his home when Chicago firefighters responded to reports of a fire at the residence, NBC Chicago reports. The Cook County medical examiner’s office determined that he died from gunshot wounds to his neck and chest. His arms and right leg had been severed, and he also had deep cuts to his neck and left leg.

WLS reports Lipford rented the home and lived there with his adult sons; he was relatively new to the neighborhood, according to the outlet.

Slaughter had been on the run since the time of the alleged killing and arson, WGN reports. He is scheduled to appear in court Dec. 8.
