INDIANAPOLIS (TCN) —Â A man was taken into custody after a fight with his roommate about leftovers escalated into violence.
On Jan. 9, police officers were dispatched to a hospital when a patient being treated there claimed his injuries stemmed from an attack and robbery by his roommate, WISH reports.
According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by WISH, the victim and his roommate, Devante Payne, 30, argued over a takeout meal of catfish and french fries Payne had purchased the day. His roommate reportedly owed him $10, but he claimed the meal was not worth the money and said he’d pay him $3 instead.
The victim, who has not been named, told police Payne allegedly rushed him, kicked him in the head, and attacked him with a baseball bat. WXIN reports the victim told officers he was hit in the shoulder and head with the bat until it broke, and Payne allegedly fired a gun into his bedroom.
The victim reportedly passed out and Payne allegedly stole his phone and claimed he would sell it to get the $10 he was owed for the meal.
The following day, officers tracked Payne down with the help of GPS monitoring, which he was under for an unrelated case, WISH reports. He allegedly pulled away during the arrest despite initially complying and had to be tased before being put into handcuffs. He was charged with armed robbery, kidnapping, possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, and criminal recklessness.Â
