A 25-year-old Iowa mother was sentenced last week to 50 years in prison after she was convicted in the death of her 3-year-old son two years ago.
Billie Mosier was also ordered to pay court costs and $150,000 in victim damages, KTIV reported.
Mosier was arrested in November 2023, six months after the death of her son, Jordan Reed. Mosier called 911 on May 4, 2023, to report that she’d found Jordan unresponsive in the back seat of her car after a drive from Ida Grove to Battle Creek. He was taken to an Ida Grove hospital but later transferred to a children’s hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, where he died the next day.
Mosier initially claimed the boy was strangled by the shoulder strap in his car seat, KCAU reported, but the investigation discovered that he hadn’t been strapped into the car seat and, in fact, Mosier rarely strapped him in while traveling. Instead, investigators said, the boy was seen by witnesses literally hanging out of the rear, driver’s side window and that apparently caused the injuries that led to his death, according to KTIV.
Authorities said that at some point during the relatively short drive, the car window went up, trapping the boy. Mosier was allegedly distracted by her cell phone, and the boy was unable to call for help.
Mosier waived her right to a jury trial, and a judge found her guilty in April.
