More than three years since the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, the FBI on Thursday arrested a 53-year-old Virginia man who allegedly assaulted police officers.
Darl McDorman is facing charges of assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers using a dangerous weapon, entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds with a deadly or dangerous weapon, disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds with a deadly or dangerous weapon, and engaging in physical violence in a restricted building or grounds with a deadly or dangerous weapon. He’s also charged with disorderly conduct and act of physical violence in Capitol grounds.
During a scuffle between rioters and Capitol police officers, McDorman allegedly threw multiple objects at cops including metal pipes. He then picked up a wooded flagpole and repeatedly hit the officers with it, feds said.
Several minutes later, officers were trying to clear the lower west terrace of rioters when McDorman allegedly picked up a folded lawn chair and hurled it at them. He also is accused of chucking a police barrier at officers.
McDorman described his involvement in the riot in a social media post two days later, the criminal complaint said. He claimed there was “no violence” until cops started deploying pepper spray and flash grenades. He claimed officers “killed an old man that was probably close to 70” and “literally blew the bottom half of an old ladies pants off.”
“I mean yeah Antifa did infiltrate the crowd and later instigate with a plan of more s— way worse than what happened but the cops cause the patriots initial reaction!” he wrote. “We the people were peaceful even after the cops first attacked us but when they killed that old man most of the patriots lost their shit 1776-style.”
Police officers did not kill anyone outside the Capitol. One officer shot and killed Ashli Babbitt who was breaking into the chamber. The officer was cleared of wrongdoing. A Congressional investigation determined that no one from Antifa infiltrated the crowd and the riot was carried out by supporters of then-President Donald J. Trump.
McDorman is one of nearly 500 rioters who allegedly assaulted police officers on Jan. 6, 2021, as Congress was trying to certify the 2020 election results.
