Explore John Brogan Murder Case. The murder of a senior farmer who was discovered shot dead in his burning home on Sunday has been charged against a guy who has appeared in court in Castlebar, Ireland.
A little before 12:30 pm today, Kevin McHale, a man in his 60s from Annagh in Castlebar, Co. Mayo, appeared before Judge Fiona Lydon. He was dressed in a black jacket, black pants, and a blue shirt.
At the Castlebar garda station, Detective Sergeant Michael Doherty claimed to have apprehended the suspect at 11.12 am and charged him with John Brogan’s murder at 11.43 am.
After being warned, the defendant didn’t respond to the accusation.
Mr. McHale has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at Roscommon’s Harristown District Court on Friday.
Gary Mulchrone, the defense attorney for the accused, did not request bail but instead requested legal aid.
He claimed that Mr. McHale’s statement of means had been provided to the court and demonstrated his receipt of a social welfare allowance. Judge Fiona Lydon accepted the application.
Judge Lydon concurred with Mr. Mulchrone’s request for all necessary medical care for his client, including a psychiatric evaluation.

On Sunday night, Mr. Brogan was discovered shot to death in his Castlebar residence. The elderly farmer had shared a home with his brother Henry until Henry’s passing several years ago. One of his sisters is still alive.
Around 6.30 p.m. on Sunday, when emergency services were contacted in response to reports of a Fire in the hallway from onlookers, the dead man was discovered inside the property in the Pheasanthill neighborhood of Castlebar.
Garda hoped that CCTV footage from an adjacent village would aid their investigation into Mr. Brogan’s passing.
Mr. Brogan was discovered inside the building with what appeared to be gunshot wounds after emergency personnel put out the Fire.
Following a preliminary inspection of the body by pathologist Margot Bolster, Mr. Brogan’s remains were sent to Mayo University Hospital in Castlebar for a post-mortem.
Garda detectives are trying to determine if Mr. Brogan’s death was brought on by the fire or the apparent gunshot wounds.
It then came to light that Mr. Brogan had been cleared of several prior sexual assault accusations against him last week and had been up against more charges concerning claims of historical abuse of a different person.
At a Mayo Circuit Court hearing on March 1, the judge ordered Mr. Brogan to be freed from 16 charges of sexual assault and found him not guilty of four additional offenses.
