A man is accused of punching an elderly shopper twice in the face at a Walmart in Florida in an unprovoked attack caught on surveillance video.
Joseph McFadden was booked into jail by Sunrise police on Nov. 17, near the 3300 block of North University Drive in Sunrise, near Fort Lauderdale, according to detectives with the Broward Sheriff’s Office Violent Crimes Unit.
The “brazen, unprovoked attack” happened just before 10 a.m. on Oct. 11, authorities said in a news release.
Surveillance video shows an older man exiting the store with a shopping bag in his hand. As he gets past the first set of sliding doors, the suspect — tall and thin and wearing a navy sweater with gray lettering on the front and black pants and sandals — punches the victim before leaving.
The victim, whose age or name authorities did not release, suffered cuts and was taken to a hospital for treatment, a sheriff’s spokesman told the Miami Herald. The newspaper reported the victim was in his 80s.
A motive hasn’t been established.
Authorities said it likely wasn’t robbery — the accused attacker didn’t steal anything. The victim did not know McFadden, and they didn’t exchange words before the assault, officials said.
McFadden was caught at another Walmart in Broward County, authorities said.
He was being held with bail set at $10,000 at the Broward County Jail on a charge of aggravated battery on a person 65 years of age or older.
