Matt Ginella is “on the mend.”
Less than a week after he was admitted to the emergency room, The Real Housewives of Orange County husband took to Instagram to share a progress report on his recovery. Matt — who filmed the September 19 update alongside his wife, Katie Ginella, and their 8-year-old son, Bandon — revealed he had suffered a pulmonary embolism that stemmed from a blood clot in his leg.
“Health Update after a recent visit to [Hoag health center],” he captioned the video. “Appreciate the doctors, nurses and staff. And thank YOU for all of the kind notes of support, DMs, texts and calls. Scary stuff. The only true wealth is health. Hug your loved ones.”

Matt said he began experiencing pain in the “left lung area” after returning home from back-to-back trips to Florida and Arizona. He explained that the pain felt “internal” and was not localized to a specific muscle.

“The pain ultimately led me to urgent care; urgent care led me to the emergency room; emergency room led me to a series of tests, CT scans, bloodwork, all kinds of stuff,” Matt continued. “The diagnosis was pulmonary embolism, essentially a blood clot in the leg had moved to the lung, the furthest reaches of the lung, in the lower part of the lung.”

The OC dad said he has been on blood thinners ever since his hospitalization, and was taking steps to prevent another pulmonary embolism. He acknowledged he was “notorious” for getting on a plane and sleeping through the flight without ever getting up or hydrating.

“I’m always reminding him to drink water,” Katie added. “And I sit in the middle or the aisle, so I can get up and use the restroom, and he just puts his hoodie up and goes to bed.”
“Gotta change all that,” Matt said.
In addition to staying hydrated, the Columbia University alum said he would start wearing compression socks and “move around more on long flights.”
Katie Ginella expresses gratitude to Matt’s doctors and nurses
“They see that I’ve had clogs in my lower legs before,” he said toward the end of the video. “They just haven’t broken up and moved to the lung before, so we’re on the mend. We’re a couple of days into it.”
Katie confirmed Matt’s hospitalization in a September 17 Instagram Story, just several days after Matt began experiencing chest pain. Although she described the incident as “scary,” Katie said she was so grateful to the doctors and hospital staff who ensured Matt was well taken care of.
