Kids find human skull during Easter egg hunt at park

LONG BEACH, Calif. (TCN) — Children hunting for Easter eggs at a park found a partially buried human skull in dense brush near a walking path, according to police.

Officers were dispatched to DeForest Park in Long Beach, California, on April 5 after receiving a report that children found possible human remains while searching for Easter eggs with their family, KTLA reports. Police cordoned off part of the park as they investigated, and aerial footage obtained by the outlet the following day showed police appearing to leave the area with remains in evidence bags.

A statement from the L.A. County Medical Examiner’s Office obtained by KTLA confirmed that a skeletonized skull and mandible were examined. Due to their size, it was initially believed the bones might have belonged to an infant. However, CBS News reports the medical examiner’s office has not yet released the age or gender.

It is unclear whether the skull was buried intentionally or unearthed due to environmental factors, KTTV reports.

The investigation is ongoing, and according to KTTV, police will review missing person cases that line up with the medical examiner’s findings.
