It’s one of the biggest moments of their lives—and it almost didn’t happen. Kristen Doute and Luke Broderick revealed more intel and unseen moments from Luke’s romantic proposal upon a boat at sunset in Hawaii, including several that nearly derailed the entire engagement. The couple also shared more about what they regret after Luke popped the question.
“I didn’t think the first thing she was going to say was ‘f—k,’ but…” Luke shared in The Valley After Show video above.
Kristen admitted she wished she hadn’t said that word as she turned around to Luke on one knee, and added, “What a moment ruiner.”
Kristen noted Luke also has a regret about the words he used in the sweet moment during Season 2, Episode 12 of The Valley.
“It is so funny to me, like, looking back, that Luke was like, ‘Did I really say, ‘Will you be my catch of a lifetime?’ He was like, ‘I have no idea why I said that,’” Kristen shared on the After Show. “It’s so cheesy and so cute.”
Luke popped the question in early September 2024 to his girlfriend of two years, with help from Danny Booko, Nia Sanchez Booko, and Zack Wickham. He designed the engagement ring with Vanderpump Rules friend and jewelry designer Kyle Chan. But it wasn’t easy to pull off surprising the woman Luke called “Detective Doute.”

Luke Broderick and Kristen Doute share the “hurdles” that almost prevented their engagement
Luke was surprised that Kristen didn’t see the proposal coming.
“Honestly, Kristen could have seen the writing on the wall,” he said on the After Show. “I think she just truly didn’t believe there was any way I would propose that soon, because we had talked about it. Baby first. All these things.”
Luke added there were “a lot of hurdles to get there,” on the day of the proposal, starting with Kristen “not wanting to shower” before getting on the fishing boat.
“I didn’t realize the boat was going to be so big and nice. I thought it was just all gross,” Kristen explained on the After Show. “I truly thought it was going to be like Bubba Gump. Like there’s a big net, and they catch some stuff, and then there’s like fish flopping around.”
Nia added that she was asked to help convince Kristen to shower and dress up for the boat ride.
“Zack I think called me and was like, ‘You need to get her to shower!’” she shared on the After Show.
Just before sunset on the boat, Luke ran into another problem. “Kristen was drafting a fantasy football team, sitting on top of the ring, in the bag, as sunset is happening,” he revealed.
But Kristen defended her actions.
“I knew it way before we went to Hawaii. I was like, ‘Okay, so one of the days in Hawaii, I have this fantasy football draft. I have to pay attention,’” she explained. “This is like super important. So I was just in there, focused on my draft. And clearly sitting on top of his duffel bag that had the ring in it that didn’t even cross my mind.”
Kristen revealed that she almost drank the celebratory champagne too soon while on the boat, but was stopped when there were no cups.
“I’m just going to open it anyway,” she recalled. “And then somebody was like, ‘Can’t you just wait until sunset?’”

Kristen also shared that Luke actually tried to warn her of another potential hurdle before they left for Hawaii that she didn’t understand until later: unmanicured nails and hands.
“I had a broken nail, and I had one press-on nail glued on,” she said. “And Luke was like, ‘Yeah, make sure, because like, you’re going to take pictures.’ But he didn’t make a big deal about it, so it didn’t alarm me.”
Have Kristen Doute and Luke Broderick set a wedding date?
Kristen and Luke officially became parents to their daughter Kaia Lily on June 13. Caught up in the whirlwind of parenthood, producers asked Luke if he and Kristen had decided on a date or location for their nuptuals.
“No, I literally forget we’re engaged at times,” Luke joked on the After Show. “It is on hold until she wants to initiate. And she feels good enough with where we are with our daughter.”
Kristen also told The Daily Dish that although there’s “zero wedding plans,” the wedding is still on her mind.
“We’ll probably start talking about that next year. It could happen next year,” she said in the interview. “I don’t know. I don’t want to wait too long, but I think we need to settle into being parents and this whole chapter of our lives and really know what we’re doing before we try to plan anything else.”
The couple also revealed that another baby and a sibling for Kaia isn’t off the table.
“I don’t know. I might go for baby number two, and then wedding, you know?” Luke said on the After Show.
