COLUMBIA, Ky. (TCD) — Police recently arrested a 57-year-old man on suspicion of fatally shooting his elderly landlord while the suspect was in the process of being evicted.
The Adair County Sheriff’s Office contacted the Kentucky State Police on the morning of March 23, regarding a shooting at a home on Old Montpelier Road within their jurisdiction.
Joseph South reportedly went to the home of his landlord, 86-year-old Earl Coffey, and allegedly fired several rounds into the residence with a firearm. As a result, Coffey sustained fatal gunshot wounds.
According to state police, there were four other people in the home at the time of the shooting.
Officials with the Adair County Sheriff’s Office located and arrested South at the scene. He was arrested on charges of murder and four counts of first-degree wanton endangerment. South remains held in the Adair County Regional Jail without bond.
According to his obituary, Coffey, a U.S. Army veteran, leaves behind a son, grandchildren, and a great grandchild.
