Las Vegas man allegedly killed maintenance worker with machete while being served an eviction notice

LAS VEGAS (TCN) — A man accused of killing a maintenance worker and injuring a deputy constable during an eviction has been charged with murder, attempted murder, battery, and resisting a public officer.

Sgt. Deputy Constable Mark Ruesch, 63, went to an apartment complex to serve an eviction notice on 46-year-old Victor Vondrasek on Jan. 6, KLAS reports. He asked the building’s on-site maintenance worker, 39-year-old Orlando Sosa, to assist him in accessing the unit.

Sosa was unable to gain access to the apartment’s front door, so he reportedly climbed a ladder to the second-story balcony, according to KLAS. As soon as Sosa stepped onto the balcony, Vondrasek allegedly broke through the sliding glass door and attacked him with an 18-inch machete, causing a severe laceration to his neck.

Ruesch then climbed the ladder to assist Sosa and was allegedly also attacked by Vondrasek.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports Ruesch shot Vondrasek and then tried to help Sosa, who was bleeding. Vondrasek allegedly kicked Ruesch in the head and hit him in the face with a bag of landscaping rocks. All three were taken to the hospital. KLAS reports Ruesch suffered a broken nose and cuts to his head and torso during the attack.

Vondrasek was arrested, booked into custody and charged with two counts of attempted murder on Jan. 7, KSNV reports.

Sosa died in the hospital from his injuries on Jan. 9, KLAS reports, and Vondrasek’s charges were upgraded to include murder.

The preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 26, KLAS reports.
