LAS VEGAS (TCD) — A 53-year-old man stands accused of fatally stabbing his wife over the weekend during a dispute about a suspected affair.
On Saturday, Feb. 3, shortly after 1 a.m., officers with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department responded to the 4900 block of Chantilly Avenue, where they located an unresponsive female, identified by KLAS-TV as Veronica Cortes-Rosales, suffering from stab wounds. Moises Sanchez had reportedly called police and admitted to killing his wife, prompting the investigation.
Medical personnel also responded to the home and pronounced the woman deceased. According to KLAS, Sanchez was standing in the driveway when police arrived, and they took him into custody.
Officers reportedly located Cortes-Rosales’ body with a “significant” amount of blood inside a bedroom that had been converted in their garage.
The couple’s three young daughters were reportedly home during the fatal attack.
According to a report reviewed by KLAS, Sanchez told investigators he and his wife, who had been married since 1999, resided in the home for approximately seven years with their daughters, his adult son, and his daughter-in-law.
Sanchez reportedly believed his wife began “acting differently” several months ago, and he suspected she was cheating on him with a co-worker. However, KLAS reports that Sanchez didn’t have any evidence of the affair and only thought so because she was not as loving with him and texted on her phone at night.
Sanchez allegedly told investigators his wife would become “nervous” when he took her phone, but he never looked through it. Sanchez also reportedly spied on his wife while she was at work. According to KLAS, while watching his wife at work, Sanchez never noticed her “engaged in anything other than normal social interaction.”
Sanchez allegedly told police he spied on his wife from a parking lot using his friend’s car on Feb. 2. Sanchez reportedly called Cortes-Rosales while she was at work and lied about his car breaking down and requested a ride from her. According to KLAS, Sanchez told investigators he became angry because his wife didn’t believe the lie and denied his request to give him a ride.
Sanchez reportedly arrived home later that day and saw his wife hanging out with their 5-year-old daughter in bed, and he began arguing with her. Sanchez picked up a hunting knife and placed it in a bedside trunk before he went to bed, according to a report obtained by KLAS.
When Sanchez tried to hug his wife, she reportedly denied his advances and pushed him away. Sanchez allegedly “lost it,” grabbed the knife, and stabbed Cortes-Rosales once in the back. KLAS reports she began screaming, and Sanchez told police he demanded she be quiet so she wouldn’t wake up the kids.
Sanchez allegedly stabbed his wife again, and blood started spilling toward the 5-year-old. According to KLAS, Sanchez told police he picked up their daughter, covered up his wife with a blanket, and placed the girl into a different bed.
Afterward, Sanchez reportedly called his cousin to come over and admitted to him that he fatally stabbed his wife.
Sanchez told detectives that if his wife had cuddled him and been affectionate toward him, he wouldn’t have stabbed her, KLAS reports.
Additionally, in a separate incident, Sanchez told investigators he used his son’s gun and shot it through a pillow as a silencer after watching a scene in a movie. However, Sanchez said the shooting was not a threat toward Cortes-Rosales.
According to police, Sanchez was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on a charge of open murder.
