A 26-year-old woman in Hawaii and her 29-year-old ex-boyfriend may spend the rest of their days in prison for brutally killing a 51-year-old mother in front of her 8-year-old daughter after she stumbled across them burglarizing a vacation rental six years ago and brutally beat her to death.
O’ahu First Circuit Court Judge Rowena A. Somerville on Wednesday handed down sentences of life in prison with the possibility for parole to Hailey Dandurand and Stephen Brown, who were convicted of second-degree murder in the 2017 slaying of Telma Boinville, court records reviewed by Law&Crime show.
Somerville also sentenced Dandurand to an additional life sentence with the possibility for parole for kidnapping Boinville’s young daughter and a 20-year sentence for the burglary, all to be served consecutively, meaning one after the other. Brown was sentenced to an additional 20 years on the kidnapping charge and 20 years on the burglary charge, also to be served consecutively.
Prior to formally sentencing the duo, Somerville and several of Boinville’s friends and family members addressed the court, often highlighting the coldblooded and brutal nature of Boinville’s murder.
“This is one of the most heinous cases to occur in Hawaii,” Somerville said, speaking directly to both of the now-convicted killers, Honolulu CBS affiliate KGMB reported. “Ms. Boinville was brutally killed when she happened upon the defendants at her place of work. The defendants could have left the premises, but instead chose to beat her with multiple objects — knives, a machete, and even a meat tenderizer.”
The victim impact statements near-unanimously called for Somerville to sentence the defendants to life in prison without the possibility for parole.
“They will now ask for parole, for a second chance at life. Is this a joke? I want to ask for a second chance to be a husband. Can I ask for a second chance for my wife to be mother to her daughter? Can I ask for a second chance for Makana to have the comfort of her mother?” Boinville’s husband Kevin Emery said, per Honolulu Fox affiliate KHON. “I demand justice. They are both a threat to society. If Stephen and Hailey walk free there will be another victim like Telma [Boinville], Makana (his and Boinville’s daughter), and myself.”
Kevin Emery’s brother also spoke, reportedly asking the court for the “maximum” sentence, reasoning that “there should be no parole” for the defendants.
As previously reported by Law&Crime, prosecutors had also been seeking the maximum punishment for the exceedingly violent murder in which the defendants beat and slashed Boinville with a machete, a knife, a hammer, a mallet, and a meat tenderizer. At the time of the slaying, Boinville, a substitute teacher, was cleaning a vacation home in Pupukea, a job she performed to earn extra money to support her daughter.
“Near the body was a bloodied hammer, knife and mallet,” officials wrote in a criminal complaint obtained by Law&Crime.
After the slaying, Dandurand and her then-boyfriend, Stephen Brown, 29, kidnapped and tied up the victim’s daughter, leaving her inside the home where the killers taunted the child with her mother’s death.
The couple fled in Boinville’s truck and were apprehended some seven hours later and both requested to die.
“He spontaneously uttered, ‘Just shoot me, I deserve this,’” officers said of Brown. Dandurand echoed the grim ask: “Can you just pull your gun out and shoot me in the head, my life is over after today.”
