Liverpool And Newcastle To Battle For Chelsea Star As Jurgen Klopp Plots Transfer Reunion
Liverpool is ready to join a host of Premier League clubs in the hunt for the signature of Chelsea attacker Christian Pulisic as Jurgen Klopp is hoping for a long overdue reunion with the USA international, according to reports. Pulisic looks set to depart the Blues in January as teams continue to declare their interest in the winger – and Klopp is keen to bring him in on a loan deal to Anfield in January.
According to 90Min, Liverpool and Newcastle are leading the race, while Arsenal and Manchester United have been heavily linked in recent weeks. His contract is due to expire in 2024 and, with no new terms currently on the table, Chelsea is considering whether to cut their losses on the player they paid £58m to sign in January 2019.
However, it is believed Chelsea would prefer a permanent exit and do not see the value in loaning out Pulisic, given that he has 19 months left on his current deal, as they look for a fee of around £40m.
The 24-year-old has emerged as a target for Klopp after impressing with displays at the World Cup, scoring once and assisting twice as Gregg Berhalter’s side made it into the last-16 knockout stage. Pulisic was one of the shining lights for the young American side, raising questions as to why he had not been featuring for Chelsea regularly.
The 55-year-old is a self-proclaimed admirer of Pulisic, having watched the attacker work his way through Borussia Dortmund’s youth system during his final season with the Bundesliga club, and is understood to be keen to reunite with the Hershey-born star.
Pulisic made his debut for Dortmund shortly after Klopp departed the club, but the German’s influence on his career should not be understated after promoting him to the first-team squad before leaving for Merseyside. Years down the line, it is clear he has kept a close eye on his progress and would welcome a chance to oversee the American.
When addressing rumours over a move for the 22-year-old in 2018, Klopp made no secret of his admiration of the American: “I have known him since he was a kid and he’s still not really old. He’s a fantastic player and it’s deserved that people think highly of him in America and in Germany, it’s the same.”
